Indexed Universal Life

Indexed Universal Life Insurance

Indexed universal life (IUL) is a form of permanent life insurance with flexible premiums and cash value crediting linked to the performance of a market index, subject to caps, floors, participation rates, and policy charges.

  • Flexible premiums

Within policy limits, funding can often be adjusted over time.

  • Index-linked crediting

Crediting is subject to caps, floors, participation rates, and charges.

  • Requires ongoing review

Performance depends on funding and policy costs, so annual reviews matter.

How IUL differs from whole life

Whole life generally features fixed premiums and contractually guaranteed cash value growth. IUL introduces flexibility in premium and death benefit, and ties cash value crediting to an index formula rather than a fixed rate.

IUL policies are more complex. Policy charges, crediting methods, and funding levels all affect long-term performance, and illustrations are projections rather than promises. Review the carrier illustration and guaranteed columns carefully.

Life insurance eligibility and pricing can change as age and health change. Comparing available options today can help you understand where you currently stand.
