Burial Insurance vs Final Expense Insurance
The two terms are often used interchangeably. Here is what actually differs — and what to look at instead of the label.
Mostly a naming difference
Carriers and agencies use both names to describe smaller permanent life insurance policies aimed at end-of-life costs. Neither term is a regulated product category, so comparing names alone tells you very little.
What to compare instead
Focus on the contract: the face amount, whether the death benefit is level or graded, premium structure, underwriting questions, and any waiting period. Two policies with identical marketing names can behave very differently.
Neither is a prepaid funeral plan
A preneed or prepaid funeral arrangement is a contract with a funeral home. Burial and final expense insurance are life insurance policies that pay your named beneficiary. Some families use both, but they are not the same product.
